Biodiesel: The Eco-friendly Future of Green Fuel Energy

The future of fuel has finally arrived, and it’s surprisingly eco-friendly and clean. Meet biodiesel, the latest and greatest source of green fuel energy on the market! So, what exactly is biodiesel? It’s a renewable, biofuel derived from recycled cooking oil or animal fats that can be used in place of diesel fuel to power cars, trucks, and more.

What is biodiesel?

The future of fuel is here and it’s surprisingly eco-friendly. In fact, biodiesel is so good for Mother Earth that it’s considered an alternative fuel source. Alternative fuels are clean-burning renewable energy resources that can be used in place of traditional fossil fuels like diesel. That being said, there are a lot of misconceptions about biodiesel. Some people think it means vegetable oil or recycled cooking grease as a fuel source—this is incorrect because biodiesel actually refers to any liquid fuel that can be made from plant matter by a chemical process known as transesterification.

How does it work?

Biodiesel is a non-petroleum-based biofuel made from vegetable oils and other types of fats. Made through a chemical process called transesterification, biodiesel is designed to be used as an alternative fuel in standard diesel engines. Biodiesel can also be used in biofuel power plants that use a cogeneration or gasification system; in these systems, heat generated by burning fossil fuels is captured and used to run an electrical generator before being returned to fuel boilers. The first commercial biodiesel was produced in 1870 by French inventor Edouard Samuel Brillié (1851–1922), who devised an extraction method that could efficiently convert petroleum into biodiesel.

How does it help us to save our environment?

Biodiesel is created by combining vegetable oil or animal fats with methanol. This fuel can be used in its pure form or blended with petroleum diesel. When used as a substitute for petroleum-based fuels, biodiesel creates less pollution and greenhouse gases while providing up to 100 percent renewable energy. What’s more, biodiesel has an exceptionally high cetane number (130) compared to other biofuels like ethanol and isobutanol—which means it ignites quickly and burns cleanly.

What are the types and grades available?

Biodiesel is a versatile energy source that comes in several different varieties. While most biodiesel is made from soybean or rapeseed oil (also known as canola), some types are made from other plants like jatropha, algae, or animal fats. Each variety has its own chemical composition and physical properties; higher grades are usually used for more expensive purposes like heating. In addition to grading by quality and application, biodiesel is also graded based on level of purity—the U.S. Department of Energy requires that all biodiesel be at least 50 percent pure biofuel before it can be sold commercially. The final grade depends on how close it falls to 100 percent purity.

How can you procure biodiesel?

With all of that being said, how can you start using biodiesel in your vehicle? The simplest and cheapest way is to buy a conversion kit and convert your vehicle to use it. There are many kits available online (and occasionally at auto shops) with varying degrees of difficulty. You can even do it yourself if you’re determined! But be warned: some kits require altering or replacing parts in your engine; as always, please consult with an expert before making any changes to a car’s mechanics.

Biofuels as an Alternative Energy Source for Sustainability

With carbon dioxide (CO2) levels steadily rising and fossil fuels such as oil and coal becoming increasingly scarce due to human consumption, renewable energy resources are our best bet for a sustainable future. Biodiesel is one alternative energy source that has grown in popularity over recent years due to its clean-burning properties and compatibility with diesel engines.
